Mantiqueira Brasil: an egg empire

"Thanks to Moba, we have the best product on the market"

When Mr. Leandro Pinto started his company, Mantiqueira Brasil, he didn't know anything about chickens or eggs. Now his business is thriving, with over 2500 employees and a total of no fewer than 13.5 million chickens spread over four locations — where four Moba machines are responsible for grading and packing all the eggs. It is hard to imagine that Leandro Pinto ever started from scratch.

I ran a shop selling agricultural machinery, but I knew nothing about chickens or eggs. Nevertheless, I decided to rent the farm.

Yet it is true, says the Brazilian: "In the late eighties, I was in financial trouble. I had no idea what to do with my life and was at a loss." Coincidentally, Leandro had a friend who owned a farm with 30,000 chickens and was eager to get rid of it. "I ran a shop selling agricultural machinery, but I knew nothing about chickens or eggs. Nevertheless, I decided to rent the farm."

Without knowledge or a business plan, he had quite a hill to climb, but through "hard work, long hours and the necessary struggles", his company became a success. Leandro says: "Fortunately, a chicken lays an egg daily, so I had an income every day, even in those difficult days." The year 2000 marked a turning point for Mantiqueira Brasil. Mr. Carlos Cunha, the former owner of a large supermarket chain, decided to invest in Leandro's company. "He believed in me and saw many possibilities."

I don't need to be the biggest or the best, I just like to work hard. That is the Brazilian mentality.

Choosing Moba

From the start, both Leandro and Carlos believed in the importance of innovation and good technology. Leandro had already wanted to invest in Moba's egg grading machines for some time. "It took a while before I had the financial resources for that," he says. In 2017, he finally purchased his first Moba machine: the Omnia FT500. An investment that, according to Leandro, paid off in droves. "The machines are extremely efficient and robust. Thanks to Moba, we have the best product on the market."

In 2018, the Brazilian paid a visit to Moba's headquarters in Barneveld. He was amazed and describes Moba’s headquarters as a great place, where you can see the knowledge behind the technology.

Recently, Mr. Leandro purchased his fourth machine: an Omnia PX530, which processes no fewer than 191,000 eggs per hour. His brand new acquisition will be placed at a new farm where there will be no cages. "Sustainability and animal welfare are the future. That I can contribute to that is one of the beautiful aspects of my work."

Mantiqueira Brasil is now the largest egg producer in South America — although these kinds of labels are not super important to Leandro. "I don't need to be the biggest or the best, I just like to work hard. That is the Brazilian mentality."
