Maassen Pluimvee Homoet: Supplier of fresh, tasty eggs

Dutch poultry company packs thousands of eggs every day with the Mopack100

Since the 1960s, Maassen Pluimvee has been well-known in Homoet, a small village in the Netherlands, and the surrounding area. Every day, the family-run business packs the eggs from their 62,000 laying hens, some of which are graded and sold in local supermarkets and their own on-site farm vending machine. This would not be possible without the help of their Moba machines: A Moba3000 grader and a Mopack100 Farmpacker installed in 2021.

The family has lived on the same street in Homoet since the start of the 19th century. "Farming is part of our family history. I have always lived here, so it is all I know," explains owner Harold Maassen. The Pluimvee Maassen business was officially founded by his father in the 1960s. Back then, the farm had a different focus: raising broiler chickens. That all changed in 2004. "When I took over the company in 1997, I also kept broiler chickens for a few years. However, at a certain point the market became much more challenging, and I saw the potential in keeping laying hens. That is why I decided to make the switch." And Harold has not regretted that choice. In the early days, Maassen Pluimvee was grading around 5,000 eggs a week. Now, they pack between 80,000 and 100,000 eggs every week.

The switch in 2004 also meant that new equipment was needed. "I asked around other poultry farmers and one name came up over and over again: Moba — a company with an excellent reputation and years of experience in developing egg grading and packaging machines. I was told that Moba stands for quality, and now I can attest to that."

The stainless-steel design makes them durable and easy to clean. If there is ever a problem with a machine and we can't solve it ourselves, it is reassuring to know that we can count on the Moba service team. They are always available and happy to help.

Thousands of eggs
Eighteen years later, Harold still relies on his Moba machines: A Moba3000 grader, which grades eggs by weight each day, and the Mopack100, which was installed in the new barn in 2021. "We were looking for a machine that could take some of the workload off our hands, as there are only four of us making sure that all of the eggs are processed every day. The Mopack100 has made this much easier; it is a fast, efficient, and reliable machine! A huge advantage of the Farmpacker is the gentle way the eggs are processed, which means fewer eggs end up with cracks."

During the transition from broiler to laying hens in 2004, initially, the focus was solely on supplying eggs for the egg market. From 2012 onwards, the company also started selling its eggs to local stores, supermarkets and restaurants. "We think it is important for us to be able to sell eggs in our local area. We are proud of our eggs, which satisfy the highest quality standards. To better meet the expectations of our consumers, we are now also holders of the Better Life animal protection label. Most of the eggs we sell are free-range, and that has been a conscious choice; we provide good living conditions for our chickens. The chickens have plenty of space to move around in our three laying stalls and in the covered winter garden when it is cold outside. The chickens can also walk through the winter garden to get to the meadow. We tend to our ladies!"

Harold and his team take care of the chickens, and their Moba machines take care of the eggs: "We need to be able to rely on our machines. The chickens lay eggs every day, so the machines have to run every day too. And that is exactly what they do! The stainless-steel design makes them durable and easy to clean. If there is ever a problem with a machine and we can't solve it ourselves, it is reassuring to know that we can count on the Moba service team. They are always available and happy to help."
