The Art of Gift-Giving in Chinese Business Culture

During the recent EuroTier exhibition, we had the pleasure of sharing a special experience with one of our esteemed Chinese clients. In Chinese business culture, gift-giving plays a crucial role in building and maintaining relationships, which is essential for closing deals. This was beautifully illustrated when our client Xi’an Gerun, Mr. Yao Jianceng who has been loyal with Moba for many years, presented a wonderful gift to Marc van Hout, our Chief Commercial Officer (CCO).


In China, the concept of guanxi, or relationships, is of great importance. Strong guanxi helps in gaining access to influential people and closing deals. Gift-giving is a way to strengthen these relationships. The gift Marc received was carefully chosen and beautifully wrapped, reflecting our client's deep appreciation and respect.


Gift-giving in Chinese culture goes beyond the gesture itself. It is a way to show appreciation and strengthen bonds. Suitable gifts are often luxury items or local specialties from the giver's country. The symbolism and presentation of the gift are just as important as the gift itself. Red and gold are auspicious colors, while white, black, and blue are usually avoided. The gift should be presented with both hands as a sign of respect.

This experience highlights the importance of cultural sensitivity and respect in international business relationships. By respecting these traditions, we not only show our appreciation but also build a strong foundation for long-term business relationships.
