Moba co-sponsors learning experience student

At Moba we see our employees as our most valuable asset. We are always looking for motivated professionals, especially with a technical background. We are lucky to have a technical orientated high school close to our headquarters: the JFC in Barneveld. Kiki Roobol, an enthusiastic 16-year-old technasium student at this school, was searching for more of a challenge in her education. Which is why she is embarking on a new adventure. After saying a (temporary) farewell to her high school, she will join a boat trip from Sint Maarten to Cuba, during which time she will receive a unique education. Moba has agreed to sponsor this student on her once-in-a-lifetime experience. This is a compelling example of how Moba helps to foster students’ passion for technology, because we understand that these students are our future.

And the interesting thing is that you can practice on board: for example by learning about the impact of the weather, like wind, on the journey with the ship.

Self-study

What exactly is this six-week learning adventure? Kiki explains: “On board, you do three to four hours of self-study every day. During these self-study sessions, you do everything you would normally do on a regular school day. Teachers are present on board to assist the students in this process. For example, if students have any questions about chemistry, a chemistry teacher will be ready to step in. In addition to the self-study sessions, there are central lessons. The teachers deliver lessons that can be applied to life on board, focusing primarily on science subjects such as chemistry, mathematics, physics and biology. These courses have a practical application on board, so it’s easier to understand the material. And the interesting thing is that you can practice on board: for example by learning about the impact of the weather, like wind, on the journey with the ship.”

It was this unique way of learning and teaching that caught Kiki’s attention: “I have great interest in science subjects, but I sometimes struggle with the theory. Applying the theories in practice on board will help me to understand things better. I will also gain more independence thanks to the self-study sessions. It will be down to me to ensure I do my homework, with no parents or teachers telling me what to do. And if I don’t do my homework every day, I will have a problem when I get back. This isn’t a vacation, it is all about learning and developing my abilities.”

Everyone has the same goal at Masterskip: to experience a really cool adventure and learn as much as possible. This will bring us all together and I have no doubt that it will be a very special time for all the trainees.

New way of life

Not only will the self-study sessions be a huge challenge, Kiki’s life will be completely different from her daily routine in Barneveld: “On board, I will have to learn to work with everyone, to deal with feedback and to express my own opinions. All of this helps to create a small society on board. I will also get to know myself better, such as how I respond to certain situations and why I respond in certain ways.”

“I am of course very curious about what it will be like on board with a group of 30 students. Everyone has the same goal at Masterskip: to experience a really cool adventure and learn as much as possible. This will bring us all together and I have no doubt that it will be a very special time for all the trainees. Last but not least I would like to thank Moba for supporting me on this amazing learning experience.”
